This Christmas card has been saved for many years because it was and is a favorite.
Although if you think about a Common Loon, one of the things that you would never associate with this water bird is pine boughs. And come on - berries ? No way! The Loon is mainly a protein eater in the form of fish. But during the very first days after the chicks have hatched they are fed the tiniest pieces of plant matter. Probably done more for chick/parent bonding than actual nourishment.
Nevertheless this makes for a pretty card and color combination. And if one was available, it would sorrily tempt me! However I prefer my Loons alive & free. Up close and personal is also a preference - mine not theirs.
Steve has built and maintains a couple of brush piles along the shoreline and the Loons like to search there for fish to eat. And we then have the opportunity to watch them more closely. This is one of the pair that use Ward Lake as their nesting territory.
Doesn't make for a very Christmasy type of photo though.
