Just yesterday we received the good news that the Ruby-throated Hummingbirds had finally arrived at Ward Lake where we have a small cabin.
Then Steve told me the bad news - over the weekend when the temperatures dipped below freezing, the buds on the Wild Columbine had frozen.
Oh dear, many a rainy weekend has been spent watching the little Hummers feed on the nectar of those beautiful blossoms. When the first Hummingbirds arrive in the spring, there aren't very many flower sources for nectar. Although they do eat the sweet sap of the various poplar trees.
So we have planted Columbine in many different places to provide a food source for spring. And each year when the seed pods form, we take the seeds and scatter them in the hopes that they will grow as nature intended.
